DIY Woodwork To Do With Parts You Can Find At Home

August 19, 2024 2 min read

Whether you are just starting out or you have plenty of experience when it comes to woodworking, one thing you can be sure of is that you will always be looking for your next project.

Buying all of the materials for a brand new project can be expensive, but with a little bit of ingenuity and a good look around your home and workshop, you can probably find a couple of new projects that you can easily do and that will cost you next to nothing. Here, we offer a little inspiration for your next, inexpensive DIY project.

Picture frames
A good picture frame will need very little wood to create, and if you don’t have four pieces that are the same wood, then you could mix things up a little to make it a little more interesting. Whether you keep the frame for one of your pictures or give it as a gift, a frame is a very easy project you can knock up in no time with things you should already have.

Floating Shelf
If you have several offcuts from the ends of longer planks, these could make fantastic floating shelves for smaller items in the home. This is a great project to use up wood that has interesting grain or knot holes, and it can enhance the overall look of your project.
You could also create simple shelves and brackets if floating shelves are not really your thing.

Bird Box
Small pieces of wood are ideal for making simple projects like bird boxes or even wall-mounted bird tables. There are plenty of different plans online that will help you get the most out of the smaller pieces of wood you have left over from other projects.

Customise a Bookcase
Not all of the projects that you can undertake in your home involving using parts that you already have need to be created from scratch. You may even want to undertake some DIY that requires improving pieces of furniture that you already have.

If you have an oddly sized or shaped nook in your home that you would like to make better use of, then you could use an existing wooden bookcase and alter it to fit perfectly into the space by adding an extra shelf with some wood offcuts.

In the same way, if you have a bookcase that you really like and works well in your home but you would prefer to be a more multipurpose storage space then you could add an extension to the top of it so that it fits to the ceiling giving you even more storage space.

Alternatively, you could get creative and make some doors to enclose some of the shelves so that you can store things that you don’t always want to be on display. There are plenty of different ways in which you could adapt an existing piece of furniture to make it more functional for you and your home.
