How to Find Woodworking Equipment on a Budget

April 22, 2026 3 min read

It is absolutely possible to find woodworking equipment to suit your needs, even if you are on a budget. You just need a good strategy, a bit of patience and a willingness to consider something other than shiny showroom tools. The real truth is that many woodworkers have built up an impressive collection of equipment without paying full retail prices for anything. Let’s take a look at how you can do the same whilst still getting long-lasting, reliable equipment.

Start with used tools
One of the most effective ways to save money is to buy used tools. Many woodworkers choose to upgrade their tools over time, and this means perfectly functional equipment is often sold at a fraction of its original price. You could consider looking at online marketplaces, local classifieds, community groups and even woodworking forums as a starting point; certainly as a place to pick up smaller hand tools. However, for larger pieces of used woodworking equipment, like a used bandsaw, it is usually better to look for a quality retailer who may have some second-hand pieces to sell, often taken as part trades against new equipment

In any second hand market, ensure to inspect the tools carefully. Look for rust, missing parts and signs of heavy wear. Always plug in power tools to ensure they work without any strange noises or burning smells. Hand tools should feel solid, have no cracks in wooden handles or chips to blades. A little surface rust is usually fine and easy to clean off, structural damage is a red flag.

Consider refurbished equipment
Refurbished tools are the middle ground between new and used. These are typically items that are returned to a manufacturer or retailer, repaired or serviced then resold at a discount. The advantage of this is that refurbished tools often have a warranty, offering you peace of mind without the full price tag. Look for a company who specialise in refurbished equipment and offers a range of brands.

Look for older, high-quality models
Newer is not always better. Many older tools and equipment were built to last. These machines, in fact, often outperform modern budget models. If you are happy to clean, tune or repaint an older tool, then you can end up with professional-grade equipment for much nicer prices.

Buy only what you need
It is easy to go overboard when outfitting a workshop, but buying tools you won’t get much use out of wastes money and space. Start with the essentials: a circular saw, drill, sander and a few reliable hand tools. Specialised equipment can be added as and when you need it. If you know other woodworkers, then you may want to consider borrowing or renting if you only require something for a one-off job.

Look out for sales
Retailers often run seasonal sales, particularly around the holidays. Clearance sections, both online and in-store, are a good place to find big discounts and signing up for retailers' newsletters may offer you early access to deals.
