Upgrade Your Woodwork with These 5 Ideas

August 17, 2020 3 min read

Woodwork is extremely popular for a number of different aspects in a home, because there’s so much you can do with it. From different finishes and varnishes to different shapes, working with wood gives you so much freedom when it comes to interior design. If you’ve already put your woodworking skills to good use in creating your perfect home, now could be the time to give it all an upgrade.

Some of the most prominent woodwork features of your house could look brand new with a lick of paint or a new varnish. With that in mind, here is some inspiration to get you started on your next DIY project.

Staircase or bannister

A staircase is a practical and necessary part of your home, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring! Give your hallway a makeover by painting your bannisters and even skirting boards, leaving the space feeling modern and fresh.

If your hallway is quite light, consider painting your staircase area in a contrasting darker colour to make an impact. This could also work the other way round; if you already have darker walls, brighten up the space with neutral paint!

Fire surround

The mantelpiece around your fire can become a focal point of the room if it’s finished well. Don’t let the fireplace take all the credit; freshen up the fire surround and bring some contemporary style to the room.

Depending what colour scheme you’re aiming for in the rest of the room, you can paint your wooden fire surround in a matching shade to bring it all together. Friends and family will be wondering where you bought your new fireplace from, when really all it took was a few hours of DIY.

Internal doors

Many internal doors often come in a standard brown or white, which can look great in your home. However, if you’re looking for something a bit more stylish, look for a grey, black or even add a pop of colour and get creative.

If you’ve fitted the doors yourself, the last thing you want to do is have to buy brand new doors in the colour you like. Put your paintbrush to good use and give your work a refresh!

Kitchen and bathroom cabinets

When you’re bored of your kitchen, many will look to replace the whole room which can get expensive. Instead, why not transform the space simply by painting the cabinets in a new colour? You can change the whole colour scheme with a couple of pots of paint, giving the room an updated look with minimal effort.

This can work in exactly the same way with your bathroom cabinets and vanity units, helping you to upgrade your woodwork in just a few steps.

Sideboards and tables

If you have wooden sideboards or tables that are starting to look a little dated, a decent paint job can do the trick. Similarly, if you’ve just made a sideboard or table and want to give it the perfect finish, consider finding a varnish or paint that matches the colour scheme of the room.

Whether you stick to neutrals or choose a brighter colour, it can make your wooden furniture much more exciting to look at and create a new focal point for the room.
